Acapulco to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

ACAPULCO TO CABO SAN LUCAS, MEXICO … This 10-day sail-training expedition is the FIFTH of a three month journey to Hawaii aboard the SV Solstice as we sail her 6,200 nautical miles to get there. You can join the Modern Geographic Team by signing up for any of SIX expeditions beginning February 21, 2018 in the British Virgin Islands, and ending May 20th in Honokohau, HI ... after that, you can join a variety of Hawaiian-based expeditions beginning the summer of 2018.

The big island of Hawaii will become the new base-of-operation for the Exner family and Modern Geographic Sailing, a location ideally suited for inter-island sail-training within the State of Hawaii, or to remote islands in the South Pacific Ocean.

ACAPULCO to CABO SAN LUCAS is a quintessential Modern Geographic expedition. Prior to departing, Paul Exner will ensure all crew members are comfortable with the systems onboard SV Solstice. As a team, we’ll analyze the trip ahead, including route planning and weather forecasting. Once we embark, we’ll set our sights to the north west. We’ll continue to practice highly efficient ocean sailing throughout the expedition, as Paul helps each sailor find, and maintain, sailing “in the groove”.

Sailing on this expedition, like all Modern Geographic expeditions, is a unique and highly customized experience. Paul constantly assesses the crew’s capabilities, and adjusts the team dynamics based on those results. As we sail to Cabo San Lucas, we will explore various Mexican anchorages. This will provide time to debrief, enjoy the surrounding landscape, and re-energize for the next ocean sailing leg.

Paul's philosophy for ocean sail-training is rooted in belief that a series of short (1 to 3-day) legs offers incredible opportunity for sailors to gain mastery of the technical-art-of-ocean-sailing, mostly because the general tasks of making land-fall and departing-for-sea are best assimilated by doing them repeatedly in different locales and under varying oceanographic conditions so the full gambit of seamanship topics can be experienced and navigated first-hand.

Every sail-training expedition utilizes the Modern Geographic Sailing Curriculum (developed over the course of Paul Exner's 40+ years of broad and serious exposure to "sailing"). Using this curriculum, Paul guides each sailor along their path to master the technical-art-of-ocean-sailing, reinforced frequently by technical discussions with the whole team to ensure that the information learned during the expedition is well founded. Please contact Paul with any inquiry you have about your goals for the expedition, or questions about the Curriculum.
